rebarbative | rɪˈbɑːbətɪv |
adjective formal
unattractive and objectionable: rebarbative modern buildings.
ORIGIN
late 19th century: from French rébarbatif, -ive, from Old French se rebarber ‘face each other ‘beard to beard’ aggressively’, from barbe ‘beard’.
I was given the word above. ' Rebarbative ' from a friend, who heard it during a lecture, where clearly the speaker had swallowed a lexicon.
No I did not know this word either, so I have included the definition above.
Now that Brexit has been renewed for another season, we can deal with the real problem, which doesn't just effect our country and Europe- no it effects our whole planet. I am referring to climate change of course.
Fifty years ago Frank Sinatra, first sang " My Way " and during these fifty years we have abused our planet, by our ways.
Without knowing the consequences we have burnt too much fossil fuel in our cars, planes and trains, resulting in a growing accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leading to global warming and the subsequent domino fallout; ice melt; seas rising; extreme world-wide temperatures; deserts and so on.
Even our meat-eating diet has not helped, for it has caused forests to be cut, yielding harmful methane gas to escape into the atmosphere. The forests are cut to create pastures for cows to graze who then also create more methane gas.
We have a mere twenty years to change our habits. If we fail, we condemn generations that follow, to exist in a world where the desertification will readily cause parts of Africa to be unable to sustain life with consequent migrations to other places. The world will be on the move, causing population pinch-points bringing social unrest and trouble, as temperatures climb and species die.
In short, an unforgiving planet.
But, in life there is always hope and it is the young who are taking the message to us all. I want to show you this video of fifteen year old Swedish girl Greta Thunberg, speaking passionately at TED talks in America. Greta is getting a big following amongst the young and is one of the instigators of asking school children to strike on Fridays to show solidarity for action on climate change.
Greta's speech
I first heard this speech a few weeks ago. I was mesmerised by her confidence and absolute certainty in her cause.
See what you think.
As always WiFi for now.
