Highs and Lows
With the start of the grass flat season today (30/03/'19 )
some words about National Hunt Racing.


Inwardly we feel excitement
but in life the  pulse is retrained
Emotions trapped in our bodies.
mostly we cope with existence -
It will do for now.

So at times  we visit a theatre of dreams
to witness equine heroes in action.
All is a dance,
 a choreography of moment
 the parade; 
the selection;
 the speculation 
anticipation,
 greed;
  joining a tribal affair.


All eyes, binoculars, glasses on the start.

(to be read in a gallop )


“Their off!” And so are we, 
straining;
peering 
watching 
voices released
 groaning 
encouraging

It’s the final lap.

anxious 
crowd pulsing,
 willing their mount
or not.

The final phase .

Crowd find their voices
crescendo building 
tension release
yelling
screaming
cursing.
nothing controlled
A highly animated 
outburst.
crying
the behaviour tolerated
a bubble has burst.


( to be read as a quiet canter )


Applaud the winning jockey
greeting like a financial adviser,
though
We  have never met, or  spoken to
the rider.
But
safe in the crowd’s murmuring
A quiet calm.
Drinks
conversations 
the wait
And
Then,
 The carnival begins over again
It's the next race.

Next Saturday, the 6th of April at 17:15 hours, the Grand National will be underway .
Tiger Roll, a warm favourite and a good Cheltenham Festival winner will try to emulate the mighty Red Rum, who in 1974 won the National for the second time in succession.
 If the Tiger stands and not rolls, he may be hard to beat. Currently due to the weight of money the  Tiger is as short as 7/2 (three and a half to one )  A stupid price indeed.

Let's have some each way fun on  Vintage Clouds, trained in the north by Sue and Harvey Smith. A good trial at Cheltenham, he is owned, by "lucky owner" Trevor Hemmings, Catch him at 12/1.

And whatever you do- STAY LUCKY!

Tuesday Glory: Spring is Coming

When Tuesdays are glorious; the birds sing; the sun shines; the bright colours come out to play and all is well with the world. Such a day was Tuesday, February 8th, at eleven  'o ' clock, when I fetched up at the Sherborne National Trust Estate. This sign looked promising, but as I made my way out of the car park and into the woodland, no snowdrops were to be seen. But although the woods were still sleeping in the shade, some catkins were  in view. Reaching the road and turning right, I soon came by the nature reserve, with its gentle meandering stream. When I reached the nearby church, I beheld  my first snowdrops; a wonderful domesticated array of white, interspersed with yellow crocus. My route then took me, from the road, back into the estate. Here, through the effect of the sun shining on the ground; were further miracles before me as I walked back to the car.   A selection of images for you. All that was left to complete this excelle

Toys for the Boys

Visited Snowshill Manor,near Broadway today. I noticed near the Restaurant, an unusual replica wind toy, with back-up electric motor. Snowshill Manor houses the amazing collection of Mr. Charles Wade, with over 22,000 objects; including toys. Above is the original toy model, suspended from the ceiling in the attic of the Manor. The replica was built by volunteer Barry Silcock and took over seven years to construct. Although, it has been up for a season, it still has problems when the wind gets up, and conversely, when the wind dies, it needs a heavier  weight to start the electric motor up. It still looks mighty impressive though. As interesting as the Wade collection is;  I prefer the Manor Garden with  many arresting borders.
