Avian Fun: Poem: Water Problems.

These engaging photographs of a Sea Eagle? in flight were taken at The International Centre For Birds Of Prey, near Newent, Gloucestershire,

Birds of Prey

which D., d. and myself, visited on a beautiful early autumn day on Saturday 14th September. Originally we were bound for Newent, but arriving there, we found that the town's annual Onion Fair was in full swing, so we changed plans and headed, instead for the  quite nearby Bird Centre. What a good idea that proved to be.

It had been many years since I had been there and the changes were many. New buildings had been added, with walkways which gave full disabled access and a cafe, which was supplied with local produce and had its own recycling  unit. Very environmentally friendly indeed.

All of the Birds looked healthy and wonderful. They all benefited from  a rotation of regular flying. Public flights took place twice a day in the flying field.

Conservation is a major concern, especially in the case of vultures; a widely misunderstood species, who are able to absorb harmful diseases, when feeding on carrion. They are becoming increasingly in danger of extinction; with poachers killing them to avoid advertising their kills.

They are in fact a very clean bird and deserve a better press than they receive

It was a great joy to see the relationships built up between  the birds (all with their own names ) and their handlers.

It gave me a new respect for these creatures and it was a rare privilege to see them, close in hand and also in flight.

The centre is open every day, except Christmas Day and by paying a few pounds extra and thereby allowing the centre to Gift Aid your money, you have free admission for a year. Sounds a great deal to me.

Re-Shoot

Moisture and heat I crave
But shaded from extreme conditions.
Dependent upon nature’s care.

My sisters mature with me
Budding towards the sun.
Then in a moment of release
We unfold in glorious colour
Tones of pink; red; white and yellow
Enveloped in scents that are all
Our very own.

We are are proud of our lineage
And expect to be looked upon
In our short season;  where some
Will leave the bush, for glass, wire and
Material.

We will not cling to life, safe in the
Maker’s promise of a return the

Following year, where we will all arise.
Once more.

Last Wednesday 2nd October 2019 AD., D. and I visited Tewkesbury, where the excess rain from Wales had caused some flooding.

Abbey Mill flooded.

Local fields in water.

I hope this will be the extent of the trouble and the water will recede.
